Without a credit card processor overlooking distribution, there’s no way to know for sure if basic labor rights took place. There is no 2257 Affidavit to prove performers were of legal age, no STI test results, no W9 or 1099-Misc IRS Forms, and there’s certainly no Model Release Form to ensure the people on film consented to have their image shared online. Unless it features a major star, most pirated content doesn’t even include performers’ names, let alone Custodian of Records addresses. There’s a mountain of paperwork missing. Paperwork that, for better or worse, is designed to protect performers’ rights and safety.”

TORONTO – A website is trying to make sure people know that pornography is fiction by hosting user-submitted videos of real people having “real sex.”

The website was born out of a 2009 TED Talk given by Cindy Gallop. She argued in her talk that pornography had distorted the way young men view sex.

“[Cindy Gallop] found that a lot of them, when they got in bed with them, they were replicating porn movies and not in the way that she felt it was malicious, or they were bad guys, but just that they were learning all about sex, and what to do in bed and what women want, from pornography,” Sarah Beall, the website’s curator said in an interview Friday.

Her website, MakeLoveNotPorn.tv, is seeking to change that. The website accepts user-submitted videos of people having sex. Beall then reviews them and decides which are uploaded for registered members to see.

“We curate it to make sure that it’s of course consensual, that it’s contextualized, that it’s creative, that it’s sometimes ‘condom hot’ as we like to say. And just to make sure that it’s the sex that people have in their everyday lives,” she said.

Mainstream porn rarely follows a story. Most often, the porn film keeps close to the script, or the screenplay. Only a few of the legendary vintage erotic films, such as “Emmanuelle,” are deeply anchored in a story. This heightens the romantic impact on the viewer but, understandably, lowers the hardcore rating of the movie. You can’t have all the love and all the lust in one play, or can you? Actually, no.

Besides the objective contrasts, there are the subjective audiences: men in trucks looking for a quick unload; men in the office going at it, under the desk; men having a break; men here, men there… Men in a hurry! This is what drives the demand towards the silly screenplays of modern porn. Men trying to deal with a crazy society, a crazy boss, or a “lazy” wife? Because if you’re not in a hurry then you must be lazy, right?

Take the porn of the 19th century (written, drawn, painted or photographed) and you’ll be amazed of the prominence of Victorian porn. Depictions of more or less natural sex positions were always part of men’s fancy – they just lacked the modern cameras then – but the sophisticated or forthright romance is there, making a beautiful (or ugly) story out of it.

Going further back in time, we’ll see greater stories and almost no more scripts. With Shakespeare, the script became the story.

Legends say that Valentine, a presbyter who lived many many centuries ago, had married soldiers that were forbidden to marry, had given sight to a blind girl, had written the first Valentine card ever. His faith in romance, his joy about the story, were stronger than the fears of the powers opposing. Put another way: the world may go to hell but love, and lovers, will always go to heaven.

Our Valentine’s Day video, titled “A Romantic Bath & My Love Relationships,” follows the story without much consideration to the screenplay. Don offers me flowers (purple tulips from Holland). Each flower in a glass with some water. He lights some candles among the flowers, to “circle” the bathtub where foam and hot water blossom by the stream of the tap. Don is goofy as you know him.

I am “surprised” as if I’d never known what I was filming the other minute… But the story shows you that I’m more pleased than surprised. How could I not be? Is there really a woman out there who wouldn’t love luxuriating in a hot, foamy bath, surrounded by tulips and candles, while her lover offers to sponge her backside, allowing her the time to relax and feel good?

Onto my other love relationship. I never knew I’d fall in love with the camera. Decades ago, it was his idea and my dare. Today it is his passion and my second nature: I love to study and analyse what the camera catches of my nudity, why others like to peep, where the next capillary had its crack under the skin of my leg and… you know what I mean. I’m fighting with ages… not just mine…

So begins Cindy Gallop’s 2009 TED Talk.  “And when I have sex with younger men, I encounter the real ramifications of the ubiquity of hardcore pornography in our culture. There’s an entire generation growing up that believes that what you see in hardcore pornography is the way that you have sex.” Then, the petite 49-year-old with a proper British accent instructs anyone in the crowd with delicate sensibilities to cover their ears, before continuing. “I have no problem responding, ‘No, thank you, I’d much rather you did not come on my face.’ But my concern is with the young girl…who doesn’t want [her boyfriend] to come on her face, but hardcore porn has taught her that all men love coming on women’s faces…and therefore she must let him come on her face, and she must pretend to like it.” It was the “come on my face” heard ’round the world, and the TED Talk went instantly viral. But Gallop wasn’t there just to vent her frustrations with past lovers. She was there to present her latest project, MakeLoveNotPorn.com, a website where the myths of porn sex are contrasted with the facts of real sex, and visitors are invited to add their own experiences to the mix.

The idea of a “porn film festival” conjures up seedy folks gathering together to collectively jerk it and pray no one’s looking; this film festival was not like that at all. At its heart, it was an experimental film festival, complete with intelligent lectures from historians, artists and former TED Talk lecturers. The audience was full of young, attentive art fanatics who were sincere in their quests to support this most audacious of fests.

While not every film actually contained porn, there were some films that were über-graphic, my-mother-would-kill-me-for-watching-this P O R N. I have seen more vaginas and penises than is humanly necessary. I’ve seen things I didn’t know existed. After three days of watching hours on hours of porn, I am somehow more depraved and enlightened than I’ve ever been.

There were some awesome films at this festival. Some were meant to be funny; others were meant to shock. Each film started with a disclaimer encouraging people to giggle, gasp and scream if they felt the need. I did all of the above.

“Here’s my thesis: porn is better experienced in community.

Sounds weird, right? Like, ew, like, community? Like, with other people watching, too? Like strangers? Or even worse, with people you know? Like, watching porn with friends? Awkward…

But I’m serious. Really, really freaking serious.

I had a weird weekend, you guys. It involved running around New York City in extremely cold weather, wine, hookahs, brunch, watching a lot of porn with strangers and friends alike at two different film festivals (CineKink and the NYC Porn Film Festival), and basically discussing pornography with a lot of people ranging from consumers to filmmakers to critics to protestors. It ended with me coming home, sick and exhausted, and having to stay home instead of going to a rad porn-festival-after-party… and thinking. A lot.

I don’t want to go into all the specifics. It would be silly to try to break down every statistic that Russell Brand cites in his video, or to transcribe the entire twenty-something minutes of audio I recorded of my argument with revolutionary communist anti-porn protestors outside the NYC Porn Film Festival on Saturday afternoon. I don’t need to explain to you the most fascinating points of my conversations with filmmakers Jennifer Lyon Bell, Morgana Muses, and Traci Traci, or the high points of my delightful brunch talk with Sarah Beall of MakeLoveNotPorn.tv. I don’t need to recount the in-depth debate over wine about a short film at Cinekink, or the bizarrely life-affirming messages that Annie Sprinkle shared with a sold-out crowd while she showed us the subversive vomit porn she made thirty years ago. That would make this long and boring to read (and, in the case of the vomit porn, kinda gross)…

Anyway, the point is this: porn can hurt us. It really can hijack our brains and cut straight from our eyes to our groins, leaving a trail along our insides. That trail can be one of shame and isolation and fear of discovery, which will wreak havoc. But it can also be a trail of intrigue and analysis that can be shared and enjoyed with other humans. Just like anything else, including the monster under the bed, it’s a lot less scary when the lights come on after the show and there are other people there, smiling and conversing, than it was when you were all alone in the dark.

“The thought of sitting through a SXSW talk discussing venture capitalists and investment would ordinarily fill most of us with dread. But when Cindy Gallop – once of ad agencies, now a consultant – is among the speakers, you know it won’t be dull.

The focus of the talk was all about vice and virtue – how some businesses can be perceived as vice but have virtuous intentions and vice versa.

As a case study Cindy used her own venture Make Love Not Porn, a ‘pro-sex, pro-porn, pro-knowing the difference’ website which contains crowd-generated adult material. The purpose of the site is to normalise sex and share stories of sex in the real world.

She shared her frustration at investors and banks, amongst other organisations, for not supporting businesses that dabble in adult material even though these commercial businesses are setting out to do good.

Described as a “hard-headed, pragmatic businesswoman” by her co-presenter, Cindy took no prisoners and said those institutions who refuse to support such projects are “directly responsible for the bad things that happen in the adult industry”.

Crowd funding didn’t seem a plausible alternative either due to the fact that too many people worry about what others will think.

This was an interesting topic for debate, primarily because in this ‘real world’ people still shy away from publicly discussing sexual subjects. It was interesting also to hear that many of the adult links on Cindy’s tweets had lots of views but very few favourites and a negligible number of retweets. Whether we pretend to be liberal or not, sex still remains a very uncomfortable subject in today’s world.

As an extension to Make Love Not Porn, there is an eagerness to develop a Make Love Not Porn Academy, which would equip parents with the information to be able to have frank and open discussions with their kids about the often swept under the carpet topic.

It was suggested, according to some quoted research, that it won’t be long until children as young as six stumble across porn online and therefore it is inevitable they could grow up having a warped idea about what sex should be like. Parents will find that a horrific forecast but it is a reality we can’t shy away from it.

The big argument here is that Cindy believes, in creating such an academy, you are doing good – educating children so they grow up understanding the difference between ‘normal sex’ and ‘porn sex’.

“Would you like your daughter’s first sexual experience to be a positive one?” was the question she posed to the audience. No one said much but we all knew the answer.

A key takeaway of the session was that if you want to change the perception of something you need to change the language around it. And that was demonstrated so poignantly by describing sexual terms using different language – it certainly woke a few audience members up.”

This recognition — that today’s “total freedom of access to hardcore porn online” conflicts with “our society’s equally total reluctance to talk openly and honestly about sex” — inspired the entrepreneur to create Make Love Not Porn, an educational website that balances the myths about hardcore porn with reality.

The tagline of the project, “Pro sex, pro porn, pro knowing the difference,” reflects Gallop’s goal of making porn more ethical — and revolutionizing sex at the same time.

Alternative sex ed: Gallop felt such a resource was necessary in the context of a culture that eschews comprehensive sex education while allowing porn, which is often violent and misogynistic, to not only proliferate, but also, in some instances, to serve as a damaging proxy for sex education altogether.

While the website seeks to demystify porn, Gallop is clear that the issue isn’t porn itself, nor is porn inherently misogynistic. The real problem is the stigma that surrounds sex in general and porn in particular.

“Porn exists in a parallel universe, a shadowy otherworld,” Gallop told Wired in 2013. “When you force anything into the shadows and underground, you make it a lot easier for bad things to happen, and a lot harder for good things to happen.”

This results in a cultural landscape in which the attitudes promoted in hardcore porn may become ingrained in children, who access it at increasingly young ages — one survey, for example, found that the average age at which children view porn is 11 years old. Young children also often encounter this type of porn in “an environment where very few parents can bring themselves to talk to their kids about sex.”
